I'm submitting this because it might prove useful, and so it could be considered for the troubleshooting article on auto spell check, since it fixed my problem. I don't know the details, but I'm guessing the process described above cleared out some residual issue developed during the course of adding custom words, but that's only a guess. I noticed the same tendency in MS Word, after a certain amount of custom words were added to the dictionary the auto spell check ceased functioning. That fixed the problem, and now misspelled words are again underlined. Without exciting the program or restarting the computer I simply returned to the same screen, checked the boxes for both options and again clicked the "OK" button. In the third panel labeled options, I unchecked the options, "Check spelling as you type," and, "Check grammar as you type," and then clicked the "OK" button. Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids I continued experimenting and resolved the problem as follows. I followed the entire tutorial for auto spell check, and did not resolve the issue. I did not have it before but it doesnt show up in Edit Modules and spell checker doesnt work for that language either. spell check, and support for various document formats, including Microsoft Word. After adding many words to the dictionary OpenOffice ceased underlining misspelled words on all documents. French is listed as the language but there is no ABC check beside it. There's no ABC check mark in front of the language box in this window (Is this where it is supposed to be?) So maybe that's the problem. Anyways, after you so incredulously pointed out this little oh so obvious bit of info, I did this and the language showed English Canadian. The tutorial says "Look at the paragraph style." Nothing about right clicking, "context menus", blah, blah, blah. Tools Options Language Settings Languages and select the dictionary you want. If dark or not so dark means "on" or "off", it does not seem to make any difference to the spell check option. There are several options to check: Tools Options Language Settings Writing Aids and check that the Hunspell SpellChecker is ticked, otherwise when you run the spell checker it will not pick up any mistakes. I click on it and it goes dark or not so dark. What I said is that I don't seem to have any option to turn it on or off. Yes, I do have a button with abc and a red line under it.
